It is hard to believe that the 4th of July holiday is here already! It seems that Memorial Day was just the other day. Time flies… Last year I was attending the Burbank Kennel Club and Ventura Dog Fanciers cluster on this same weekend. I know many of you, along with me, will miss the weekend at the beach this year. It was definitely one of my all-time favorite shows.

Mastiffs are 28th in popularity out of 190 breeds according to AKC’s registration statistics. They are the seventh most popular working breed and the second most popular giant breed. AKC recognized Mastiffs in 1885, one of the initial breeds registered, not one of the newer breeds. We found just fourteen Mastiff breeder-judges to invite to take the survey on their breed priorities. When asked about the low number, one of the experts said they were pleased with the number, since earlier there were only two Mastiff breeder-judges.

Surprisingly, the origin of the Newfoundland is a very debatable matter. Although the breed has obviously been in existence for hundreds of years, few early breeders recorded the history of their canine companions; even Cabot, the famed explorer, whose name is so closely linked with Newfoundland, never made mention of these huge dogs.

The Choking Doberman. As far as urban legends go, that chestnut was a mutating virus in our cultural landscape long before social media commandeered fake news distribution. It’s far from the only sour note that’s marred the Doberman’s public image over the years. They come in all flavors, but basically reiterate the same frightening theme of demonic canines run amok.
