The New York Times Reports on Lassie’s Comeback
On Saturday, The New York Times reported on DreamWork’s plan for Lassie’s comeback as a merchandise star.
Lassie has been a household name for decades – her first on screen appearance was on the Saturday Evening post in 1938, the movie Lassie Come Home released in 1943, and the self titled TV series released in 1954 for nineteen seasons. DreamWorks bought the rights to Lassie in 2012, in hopes to start a successful merchandise line. DreamWorks chief brand officer noted that the product line could include dog food, dog accessories and grooming supplies.
Lassie has been on a media campaign this summer to be reintroduced to the public and to help reignite the public’s feelings of Lassie as a heartwarming hero. She has visited People magazine and appeared on Good Day LA. There are plans for her to be in Vanity Fair magazine and on the next episode of Project Runway.
