Have you ever been caught off guard by the judge saying something out of the normal, in-ring instruction? Most exhibitors have at one time or another, and then later wondered if they said the right thing or should have been more confrontational or less confrontational–or just shut up completely.

Some judges talk a lot. Other judges are quieter, only issuing the necessary instructions. Here’s something all judges have in common–they’re all human, different from each other, and not exactly the same–every day–themselves.

Kinda like you, right?

It can be tough to have a conversation you’re not prepared for. Most handlers have the same necessary responses to the judges’ necessary instructions and can be caught off-guard when something new is said, or when the judge gets something wrong in the exam. Here are three potential scenarios:

1. The judge asks for the wrong dental exam.

2. The judge tells you that your dog needs improvement in a certain area, according to the Standard.

3. The judge makes what feels to you like an inappropriate remark.
