My position as publisher of The Canine Chronicle puts me in the position of hearing every imaginable reason about why someone’s dog lost at a recent show. As you can imagine, the discussion usually involves the quality of judging and the quality of the competing dogs.

My prior occupation as a professional handler allows me to understand the frustration of the person on the other end of the line. I’ve been there and done that. However, I also understand that the excuses we make for a loss are often based in fantasy more than fact. I’ll save further discussion about my thoughts on this subject for another day. I want to use this space to share three personal experiences about competing that will hopefully change your perspective about our sport.

My first account occurred when I was a young handler. Amy and I were trying to make our mark in the sport. We were working hard and doing our best to make sure our charges were in great condition and shown to the best of our ability. Unfortunately, the dogs in our truck were not very good. No matter how much effort we put into their conditon and presentation, they were not good enough to win regularly against good competition.
