I remember my first dog show like it was yesterday. It was the Chicago International at McCormick Place Convention Center. While my mind was lost in amazement at the sheer scale of the show, the benches, the number of rings, etc., I was also physically lost trying to find my place to set up on the bench. I kept thinking, “Maybe I should have chosen a smaller, local show,” for my initial foray in the sport of purebred dogs, but my youth masked any apprehension I might have felt.

I?had my table, grooming bag, resco, and judging program… oh, and my little dog in a 200 Vari-Kennel. I was dragging it all around trying of figure out where the heck I?was supposed to go.?I asked a person for directions, but they were quite busy and couldn’t be bothered. I asked another, but they were as lost as I was even though, lucky for them, they found their benching spot. After three or four queries, I ran into a very nice, older lady with a dog of my breed. I asked her if she could direct me to the place where I should put my dog.

She must have felt sorry for me, or had a soft spot for kids, because instead of telling me where the benching for my breed was located, she turned around and walked me to it. And along the way, a friendly conversation ensued. Where are you from; how old are you; where did you get your dog? She asked questions, I answered, and by the end of my journey to the bench, it seemed like I had a friend, or at least a familiar face amongst a sea of people.

My newfound friend told me how to set up my grooming in front of the bench which was different from the other type of benching where the grooming was away from the benched breeds.?Who knew?
