In response to the questions posed by veterinarians and dog owners, Trupanion Pet Insurance sponsored an open Q & A seminar hosted by Dr. Scott Weese and Dr. Michael Lappin. The complete recording can be found at k9illness.trupanion.com

Dr. Weese is a veterinary internist, Director of the University of Guelph Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses, Chief of Infection Control at the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre, and is a member of numerous national and international committees dealing with infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Lappin is a veterinary internist, Professor of Infectious Disease at Colorado State University, and chair of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association One Health Committee.

What states or provinces are most affected?

In the United States, Oregon has the highest increase (62%), then Nevada (43%), Colorado (36%), California (9%) and Virginia (5%). In Canada, Quebec has seen a 71% increase, followed by Nova Scotia (33%), Ontario (25%) and British Columbia (6%). These statistics are taken from claims for respiratory illnesses submitted to Trupanion.

Could this increase in cases be affected by decreased vaccination or increased socialization post-COVID?
