We often overlook the multiplicity of amazing enterprises that spring up around shows, and the creativity that is regularly inspired by this constant display of beautiful dogs. G&G Studios has been a familiar presence at shows for more than three decades. And a piece by Virginia Perry Gardiner represented the supreme indulgence to celebrate a favorite dog or commemorate a remarkable win. On September 10 Virginia succumbed to her long battle with cancer at age 67.

I understand that many people are not happy that the Westchester Kennel Club show has moved from Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, New York to Bridgewater, New Jersey.

…And we’re still getting used to the bag’o’treats they unveiled last July- 4-6 Month Puppy Competition, Reserve Best In Show, and Open Shows.

Almost all our average dog show photographers shoot only stacked, profile ‘win’ show photos. Instead, they should be focusing on and we should demand, movement shots.

The Canine Chronicle has confirmed that Inverness Kennel Club will not hold either of their shows scheduled for January. The shows help form the successful Florida Classic Cluster formerly held in Brooksville, Florida. The dates of the shows being cancelled are on Saturday, January 12, 2013 and Thursday, January 17, 2013.

The function of the seven cervical vertebrae in a dog is to support the head and protect the spinal cord. It is constructed in a gentle “S” curve allowing the head to be arched upwards and backwards, so the head can be held facing the direction of movement, and also allowing forward flexion to reach the ground for sniffing and eating.

One would expect that the number of puppies entered that day would double but, from my observations, this is never the case. Also, consider the same club in the middle of the circuit that decides to lower their entry fee by one dollar. Again, my observations show the increase in entries is negligible and, in fact, the club may be throwing away over $1,000 dollars, or more, depending upon the size of the entry.

There have been cultural changes and the manner of preparation has undergone alteration. A compromising of that which is substantive is frequently evident. Preparedness clearly differs a great deal and hence the resulting level of competence. Learning curves do, of course, vary considerably and the ability to effectively and intelligently apply acquired knowledge obviously differs among individuals.

It is hard to imagine that AKC can’t find another venue at a different time of year so as to not conflict with ADSJ’s Institute, the latter of which is held in such high esteem by so many of us for offering what we feel to be an incredible “bang for the buck.”
