The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a product of crosses of breeds that Europeans brought to southern Africa with native dogs available. The crosses introduc-ed or produced the ridge which is a hallmark of the breed–a length of hair growing in the reverse direction on the back. It is the only fully AKC-recognized breed with this feature.

Heart disease is a common problem in dogs and, just as in people, can be caused by a variety of underlying conditions. The topic of heart disease in dogs is not a simple matter, in large part because of its complex nature. There are a number of different types of heart diseases–with both similar and different signs and symptoms, as well as different diagnosis and treatments.
Today, if you want to know the standard for any particular breed, there are myriad sources–from the AKC website, to the various national breed clubs, and from many breed-specific magazines and books. Or, you can simply have a look at breed class winners at major shows.
Time has a way of rendering all of us to dust. Ringside, as I watch the beautiful dogs and their people trotting around, I think of the dedicated breeders of days gone by who devoted their time and money to carry their breeds forward for the next generation. Most of those names are forgotten now except for the gilded few, but they dedicated their lives to the future of dogdom, passing the torch to the next generation. The dogs we cherish today are the unextinguished flames of an earlier era.

Westminster is just around the corner and as much as we look forward to our annual OD of glitz and glamour, we are also prepped for rude shocks. Yes, this is the notorious venue of upsets where big winners take a nosedive and fifteen minutes of proverbial fame is bestowed on dark horse contenders. Regardless of who wins or loses, the post-show debates invariably center on the judging. Every decision is dissected and debated for months, actually for years in some cases. Thanks to live streaming, the entire sport can now participate in those merciless critiques.

Many years ago, I wrote a very popular column for the UK’s most successful canine publication. This assignment came about at an interesting time in dogdom; in the fallout of Pedigree Dogs Exposed when, it seemed, every ill was placed at the feet of ‘those evil pedigree dog breeders’.
