The young people competing in the sport of Junior Showmanship are vitally important to the future of our sport. And, because of that, there are many of us who judge Junior Showmanship that feel it is the most important assignment a judge can have at any show, large or small.

Does your dog trance? Have you seen him creep in slow motion in an almost trance-like way, often as low-hanging leaves or clothes brush along his back? That’s called trancing, or ghost walking, and nobody knows why some dogs do it, but they do. Go to YouTube and search for dog trancing and you’ll see lots of examples.

Twelve years ago, the UK was shivering through one of its coldest winters on record. Even on the mild south coast (where we then lived), crisp snow lay on the ground. Usually (although England practically collapses when even a mere inch of snow falls) I would simply have enjoyed the snowy, picturesque scenes but things were very different that year.

One of life’s many mysteries is the emotional connection between dogs and humans. I don’t think any scientific study will ever be able to completely explain the bonds we forge with our dogs. As I sit at my desk putting words on the screen, my dog is either snoozing on his dog bed that’s between my desk and my office door or on the couch on the porch, a bit closer to the outside door.

In 1974, a veteran newspaper reporter named Rick Rutledge decided to start a business. His plan was to couple his passion for the sport of purebred dogs with his media savvy to start a newspaper about the sport. This led to his launch of The Canine Chronicle in 1975.
