It was Friday evening. Fridolin, Clark’s two-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog, had finished his dinner and was lying quietly in the backyard. A sudden yelp startled Clark! He let Fridolin back in the house, watching him closely. His beautiful Berner couldn’t settle – he was restless and seemed anxious, with his pupils dilated. Then he started hiccupping or trying to retch. His abdomen looked and felt normal, but Clark knew something was off.

I am in the middle of judging a breed of toy dogs, when a lovely exhibitor very timidly says, “This is my first day showing a dog. I am not sure what I am supposed to do.” I assure her that she has come to the perfect ring. “You have nothing to worry about here,” I say in a gentle voice.
