When you’re reading the premium list for a show, maybe you’ve run across a list of people on the Bench Show Committee. Did you wonder what that was and how it works?
Believe it or not, I haven’t always been the dog show giant you see before you. There was a time when I was the equivalent of the dog show ninety-pound weakling, continuously having defeats kicked in my face instead of sand. Okay, maybe I’m not a giant but I wanted to get my point across. Those of you that are still with me, let me explain.
The American Kennel Club defines dog shows by saying, “…the true purpose of conformation showing is to evaluate breeding stock. The dog’s conformation… is an indication of the dog’s ability to produce quality purebred puppies, and that is what is being judged in the ring.”

Suomen-pystykorva–the national dog of Finland, also called Finsk Spets–translates as Finnish prick-eared dog. In AKC, it is called the Finnish Spitz. Developed in Finland from Spitz-type dogs for thousands of years, it was used to hunt all types of game. His skill at barking and pointing game in trees led to his specialization in hunting birds.
French Bulldogs have dominated America’s purebred scene for several years now. Once again they topped the AKC registration stats for 2021 and there’s no sign of any slowdown there. This triumph is well-deserved, but also surprising.
