AKC Canine Health Foundation Announces the Winner of the 2025 Discovery of the Year Award!
The Canine Health Foundation presets the inaugural winner of the Canine Health Discovery of the Year Award: Dr. Lisa Freeman of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.
Dr. Freeman earned this honor for her pioneering research into diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) – work that has uncovered a promising biological mechanism that may explain why dogs are developing this devastating disease and that may accelerate the path to prevention and treatment.
When you speak with Dr. Freeman about her research, one thing becomes immediately clear: she is deeply passionate about finding answers for this horrible disease, which has affected thousands of dogs of all breeds for nearly a decade.
“I feel a real sense of urgency with this research. These are people’s beloved pets that are affected,” said Dr. Freeman. “I don’t want more dogs to suffer. And for the dogs and owners already affected…I want to do justice for them.”
