After the last person to board frantically shoved his bloated carry-on into a space designed for far less, the pilot made an announcement: there was “unfortunate weather in Denver.” He explained that we’d be delayed and that they were going to add more fuel just in case we had to circle. A typical collective moan followed, but with less enthusiasm than before the new era of constant delays and cancellations. I guess we’re just getting used to it.

But then, just minutes after his delay announcement, the engines suddenly roared, and without explanation, we lifted off as scheduled. When we reached the acceptable altitude, the pilot reported that he’d found an opening between the hail, rain, thunder, and lightning. We’d be “threading the needle.” Comforting to know. A few hours later, his skills were confirmed, and we landed nearly on time without incident—no stitches or arrests. Luck was on our side. It was going to be a great weekend.

Breakfast was included at the hotel the next morning. I arrived a few minutes after fellow judge (one of the best), Bonnie Threlfall, was settling in for the AM fiesta. Another judge, Annella Cooper from Alaska, joined us. Bonnie and I have known each other for more years than we dare count, so we had plenty of tales to tell. We finished up and tossed our paper plates, with small remnants of powdered eggs and unidentified meat patties, into the trash bin and reached for our luggage. At that very moment, the news came that the show had been delayed one hour, and we were to wait at the hotel. More coffee, please.

We assumed the delay was a result of the aforementioned previous day’s storms. However, that was not the case. Instead, the lawn sprinklers had gone off inside the handlers’ tent. I didn’t have the courage to ask if any hairy breeds were on the tables when Old Faithful erupted. Things happen. Just another day in the life of those attending dog shows.
