What will dog shows be like in 25 years? Or in 50? About 20 years ago I was writing for Dog World magazine, and the writers were asked to answer with our views of the future. And just about every one of them was filled with optimism. Shows would be huge, and of course, travel easy. Dogs would be checked in an out of the ring with a scanner, and the whole stewarding process would be automated. Dog magazines would still be around, but online versions would be filled with MTV-style video ads for dogs rather than still photography. Some online judging using videos would be available, but old-fashioned shows would also be popular. Dog clubs would be bigger, but services would be available to put on shows. They might include random, computer-generated judging panels. Beautiful, centralized venues, owned by the AKC or a consortium of local clubs, would have every kind of dog sport all available in one place.

The only things missing were flying cars, a 5-minute workday, a robotic maid, homes in the sky, and Astro. The Jetsons, in case you don’t recall, was set in the “futuristic” year of 2023.

As I said, I think that survey was about 20 years ago, so we better get off our butts if we want that to happen. So I repeated that same question to people. The results were no longer optimistic. In fact, the most common reply was that “Dogs shows will be gone.” Respondents cited many reasons:
