Remembering James “Jim” Ham
We received the very sad news that James Ham of Saint Clair Shores, Michigan passed away. Jim, as his friends called him, was a longtime fancier and AKC Judge.
Jim purchased a pet Dalmatian in 1970 for $100. She went on to become both an American & Canadian Champion as well as an American & Canadian UDT, the first of her breed to do so. He also bred, owned, handled and trained Smooth Fox Terriers and Border Terriers across many AKC venues. Jim exhibited in Obedience, Tracking, Agility, Rally and Conformation.
Jim became an AKC Judge in 1984; he judged the Terrier Group, Non-Sporting Group, Best In Show as well as some Hounds, Toys and Herding Breeds. Jim was the Obedience, Rally and Agility Chairman for the Oakland County Kennel Club for many years. In 2011, Jim received the AKC Lifetime Achievement Award for Companion Events – a great honor representative of his commitment, dedication and contribution to the sport of purebred dogs.
A retired elementary school teacher as well as swimming and tennis coach, Jim was encouraging and supportive to all exhibitors. He enjoyed sailing and was an avid sports fan. Jim will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and pleasant demeanor.
The Canine Chronicle extends our deepest condolences to Jim’s wife, Helen, family, and many friends who knew and loved him.
