Part One of this article discussed the differences between AKC shows and The Kennel Club shows in the UK as they relate to the making of a champion and the entry-size per championship show. Much of the data regarding “too many shows” is back in Part One. No need for calculators this time; Part Two looks at the bigger picture, the collateral damage, and the potential consequences for our sport.

An overview of the core data in Part One can be summarized as follows: we now have about twice the number of shows and half the number of breed-entries-per-show than we did 40 years ago. By increasing the number of shows, the breed entries and overall entries-per-show are spread too thin to be sustainable. The shift has been incremental but accelerated over the past 20 years. And, without the addition of the 52 new breeds in those past 20 years, the entries-per-show would have dropped even more dramatically.

What do more shows and fewer entries-per-show mean for the sport? The ramifications affect clubs, judges, judging approval processes, point schedules, vendor sales and everything in between. What follows is a brief exploration of some, but not all, of those issues. These key elements alone have undeniably changed our sport and deserve discussion and new ideas.
