What do you do to encourage newcomers in your ring?

I believe taking your time with new exhibitors is essential. Many have never been in the ring or are very new to the sport. Judges run their rings differently, and in my opinion, giving clear and concise instructions helps to calm a newcomer’s nerves. I also believe if a new exhibitor asks about their dog or their handling skills, we as judges should be encouraging and honest, not just give the standard response, “I like the other one better.” Judges should make their ring an inviting place and have an “open door policy.” Smile and be kind!

How do you promote good sportsmanship in your ring?

I believe in order to promote good sportsmanship in their ring, the judge needs to take their time with each and every exhibit. Be consistent in your exam and gaiting. Every exhibitor and dog deserves your undivided attention. Consistency in judging also promotes good sportsmanship. No one should ever be upset about losing as long as they can follow the judge. Even exhibitors not winning or placing will go home feeling that they got a fair shake. Thank each exhibitor when handing out ribbons; again, exhibitors deserve your time and attention. Good sportsmanship begins with an inviting atmosphere, and good Sportsmanship is contagious.
