I first began writing (professionally) nearly ten years ago. It was a baptism of fire and came about all because of a single letter I penned to Dog World concerning mandatory microchipping of dogs in the UK.
This letter provoked such a stark difference in response; one of significant support from dog owners and scorn and almost a character assassination from the ‘powers that be’.
It provided me with an early and very valuable lesson; if you’re going to write, never be bland or take the easy route of safely sitting on the fence. Come down firmly on the side of something you truly believe in and defend it rigorously.
After my letter had been published, I was subsequently offered a column at Dog World and the rest, as they say, is history!
I had numerous skirmishes writing my ‘Crossing the Headlines’ column, one of the most memorable came about when exposing the hypocrisy of one particular writer from the rival dog paper, who had been telling his American audience one thing completely different to the position he took when writing for his UK audience. Fireworks subsequently flew and I was named and belittled in his column.
Not one to ever back down from an argument, (I blame my Irish ancestry!), I responded with a letter that addressed some of his criticisms, and, to their immense credit, the paper published it.
One of my biggest supporters at this time happened to be someone who actually wrote for this rival paper. He expressed his support for me (and my stance) publicly through his widely-read column. It was a very kind (and brave) gesture that meant so very much to this fledgling writer.
“Keep on pushing their buttons,” was his advice.
