Texas Governor Outlines Next Phase of Reopening Plan, Including Equestrian Events

A horse show in Fort Worth, Texas

On May 18th, Gov. Greg Abbott released details about the continued reopening of the State of Texas. In addition to the reopening of bars, child care services, and the expansion of the allowable occupancy limits for restaurants, there was a note regarding Rodeos and Equestrian events with a date for reopening allowable on May 22nd.

Given that this is one of the first states to do so, it’s worth taking a look at the Checklist for Rodeo and Equestrian Events in the Minimum Standard Health Protocols. For example, effective May 22nd, individuals and/or sponsors may put on rodeos and equestrian events with spectators being allowed, provided that “indoor venues limit the number of spectators to no more than 25% of the total listed occupancy of the venue, and outdoor venues may operate at up to 25% of the normal operating limits as determined by the facility owner.”

Furthermore, six feet of separation should be maintained, including keeping at least two empty seats between parties in any row of the stands. Regarding face coverings, events should “consider having all employees, contractors, volunteers, and/or participants, wear cloth face coverings (over the nose and mouth). If available, individuals should consider wearing non-medical grade face masks.”

However, the checklist did indicate that larger gatherings that include a rodeo or equestrian event, “such as a county fair, are not authorized at time.”
